Since 1996, all events have been organized by Environmental Informatics Institute (EII). ISESS is held as a biennial conference in odd-numbered years and covers the full range of Enviromatics topics. Beginning in 1998, a topic-specific workshop was organized for even-numbered years. In 1998, the workshop Design Principles in Environmental Information Systems took place in the Nature Park Sölktäler (St. Nikolai, Austria). In 2000 the workshop Integration in Environmental Information Systems took place in the Grand Hotel Zell Am See, Austria. In 2004, the workshop Environmental Risk and Emergency Management was held at James Madison University, USA.
